Short answer: both exams can prove German at B2. The competent recognition authority in your federal state decides which certificates it accepts. Ask that authority before you book either exam. If both are accepted, the choice is practical: telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege tests German in nursing contexts and certifies B1 or B2 in one sitting. Goethe-Zertifikat B2 is a general exam with four separate modules, and you can retake a failed module alone.
The two exams side by side

First, check what your authority accepts
Nursing is a regulated profession in Germany. The federal guidance on Make it in Germany states that nurses generally need German at B2 for the licence to practise. The evidence rules are not national. The competent authority in your target federal state defines which certificates it accepts.
Use the Recognition Finder to identify your authority. Then ask one question: "Which German certificates do you accept for my case?" Do not choose an exam on a recruiter's or a course provider's promise. Our nurse recognition guide explains the full process.
The case for telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege
The content matches your job. The reading and listening texts come from everyday nursing work. The writing task is a nursing report. If you already work in care, the contexts are familiar, and your professional vocabulary counts.
The scaled result protects you. The exam certifies B1 or B2, depending on your performance. If you miss B2 on exam day, you can still receive a B1 certificate. In a pass-or-fail B2 exam, the same performance produces no certificate.
One sitting. You complete the written and oral parts in one exam. There are no partial exams to schedule. Our exam format guide lists every subtest and the official timings.
The case for Goethe-Zertifikat B2
Modular retakes. The four modules — Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen — are separate exams. You can take them together or separately, and you can retake only the module you failed. If writing is your one weak skill, this saves money and time.
A general certificate. Goethe-Zertifikat B2 proves general German, not nursing German. It stays useful outside the recognition case — for study places, other professions or a later career change.
Wide name recognition. The Goethe-Institut brand is known to employers and authorities worldwide. That does not make it more valid than telc for your case; validity is the authority's decision. But it can simplify conversations with employers abroad.
How to decide
- Identify your competent authority with the Recognition Finder.
- Ask the authority which certificates it accepts for your case.
- If only one of the two is accepted, take that one.
- If both are accepted and you work in care: take telc Pflege. The contexts fit your daily language, and the scaled result reduces your risk.
- If both are accepted and you fail single skills under time pressure: consider Goethe B2 for its module retakes.
- Book the exam date only after steps 1–2. A certificate the authority rejects is a lost fee.
