Exam structure
59 written items, one paired oral exam
Hören, Lesen and Sprachbausteine together make up the 59-point written core. Schreiben is graded separately within the same sitting; Sprechen is a different day and a different scale entirely.

| Teil 1 | Telephone messages — 4 short calls, each played once | 4 × MC (a/b/c) | 4 | ~5 min |
| Teil 2 | Everyday conversations — 5 dialogues (ward round, shift handover, patient/relative talk); each with 1 True/False (global) + 1 MC (detail) | 5 T/F + 5 MC | 10 | ~8 min |
| Teil 3 | Team meeting — one longer discussion with about 3 speakers (a resident's case or a new policy) | 6 × MC | 6 | ~8 min |
| Teil 4 | Opinions — 1 topic with an example plus 3 speakers; match 6 summary statements to them | 3 matching | 3 | ~4 min |

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teil 1 | Emails overview — match 6 subject lines to 4 emails | 4 matching | 4 | — |

| Teil 4 | A semi-formal information text — True/False statements | 3 T/F | 3 | — |
Sprachbausteine (Gap-fill) — 18 points
Lesen and Sprachbausteine share a single 60-minute block within the 115-minute written exam.
| Part | Task | Items | Points | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teil 1 | 8 gaps in one report — choose from a box of 10 words (each used once, 2 left over). Tests connecting words, not grammar rules | 8 matching | 8 | — |

Schreiben (Writing) — 20 points
| Part | Task | Items | Points | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| — | Task A (admission/intake report) OR Task B (biography report): turn a marked form (Bogen) into a flowing report. All information on the form must be used | 1 task, 120–170 words | 20 | 30 min |
Sprechen (Speaking) — 100 points, separate sitting
50 points for content (as below) + 50 points for language (Aussprache/Intonation, Flüssigkeit, Korrektheit, Wortschatz).

Written exam: 115 minutes, no break. Sprechen: 20 min preparation + ~16 min paired oral exam.
Scoring & certificate
How B2, B1 or no certificate is decided
| Component | B2 | B1 | unter B1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| HLS — Hören+Lesen+Sprachbausteine (59 pts) | 43–59 | 27–42 | 0–26 |
| Schreiben (20 pts) | 15–20 | 7–14 | 0–6 |
| Sprechen (100 pts) | 75–100 | 35–74.5 | 0–34.5 |
Sprechen is the gatekeeper
If Sprechen lands “unter B1,” there is no certificate at all — no matter how strong the rest of the exam is. For a B2 certificate, Sprechen itself must reach B2, and at least one of HLS or Schreiben must also reach B2 (neither may be “unter B1”). There are exactly three passing combinations (HLS / Schreiben / Sprechen): B2/B2/B2, B2/B1/B2 and B1/B2/B2.
For a B1 certificate, Sprechen must reach at least B1, and at least one of HLS or Schreiben must reach B1 too. The remaining component is allowed to be “unter B1” as long as it clears a minimum floor — 19 points for HLS, 4 points for Schreiben. The exam is only ever repeated as a whole; there's no partial retake and no carrying over a previous result.

Lesen Teil 2 · Pflegeplanung (excerpt — 2 of 8 lines, 2 of 5 statements)
Case: Frau Albers, 84, Z. n. Oberschenkelhalsfraktur, beginnende Demenz. Match each statement to the line it summarizes — one statement in the full task always matches nothing at all.
| # | Problem | Ressourcen | Ziele | Maßnahmen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| c | Frau A. trinkt zu wenig; es besteht das Risiko einer Exsikkose. | Trinkt gern Apfelschorle; akzeptiert Erinnerungen. | Nahziel: Trinkmenge von mind. 1,5 l tgl. ist gesichert. Fernziel: Frau A. trinkt in vier Wochen weitgehend selbstständig ausreichend.
Example of an X statement — close to the case, but matches no line above: „Frau Albers erhält ihre Mahlzeiten passiert." → X
Schreiben · Aufgabe A (Aufnahmebericht)

Common questions
What is telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege?
It's a dual-level (skaliert) professional-language exam for international nurses. Every candidate sits the same exam, and the result is either a B2 certificate, a B1 certificate, or no certificate at all, depending on your scores. It's a language exam, not a nursing-skills exam — built around real ward situations like Übergabe (shift handover), Pflegeplanung (care planning), and conversations with doctors, patients and relatives.
What are the exam parts and timing?
The written exam runs 115 minutes with no break: Hören (listening), Lesen (reading) and Sprachbausteine (gap-fill) together are worth 59 points, and Schreiben (writing a report) is worth 20 points within that same block. Sprechen (speaking) is separate — 20 minutes' preparation plus a paired oral exam of about 16 minutes, worth 100 points on its own scale.
How do I get the B2 certificate?
Certification follows an official combination table, and Sprechen is the gatekeeper: if Sprechen scores “unter B1” (below 35/100), no certificate is issued at all, regardless of everything else. For B2, Sprechen itself must reach B2 (75+), and at least one of your other two components — HLS (Hören+Lesen+Sprachbausteine) or Schreiben — must also reach B2, with neither dropping into “unter B1.” There are exactly three passing HLS/Schreiben/Sprechen combinations for B2: B2/B2/B2, B2/B1/B2 and B1/B2/B2.
Do nurses need B1 or B2 in Germany?
B2 is the language level most commonly requested for Anerkennung (recognition) of a foreign nursing qualification, though some recognition paths accept B1 first with a requirement to reach B2 later. Exact requirements vary by Bundesland and by your individual recognition route — always confirm the current requirement with the responsible recognition authority (Anerkennungsstelle) for your case before relying on this.
Is soruLab affiliated with telc?
No. soruLab is an independent practice tool. Our questions are original material written to match the official exam's task types, structure and difficulty — never copies of telc's questions. For an official mock exam, telc provides one directly; see the link at the bottom of this page.
How is this different from general B2 practice?
General B2 material practices everyday and academic topics. This is built entirely around nursing scenarios and text types — Übergabe dialogues, Pflegeplanung care-plan documents, and Pflegeberichte (care reports) — plus the profession-specific vocabulary (verabreichen, mobilisieren, Teilübernahme, Nahziel/Fernziel...) that generic B2 courses don't cover.
