German Coloring Pages for Kids: How to Use Them at Home

A short guide for parents: how a German coloring page teaches your child new German words, which topics to start with, and how to use one page in ten minutes.

Many children learn German at school but speak another language at home. A list of German words is a hard start for a child of 6 to 10. The child reads the word, forgets it, and loses interest.

A German coloring page gives the word a picture. Your child colors a cat and reads die Katze on the same page. The word connects to the picture, to a color, and to the movement of the pencil. This connection helps your child remember the word.

Which topics to start with

Start with things your child already knows. Your child knows the object in the home language. The German coloring page adds the German word to it.

These topics work well for a first month:

  • Pets: die Katze (the cat), der Hund (the dog)
  • Colors: rot (red), blau (blue), gelb (yellow)
  • Animals: die Giraffe (the giraffe), der Löwe (the lion)
  • Food: der Apfel (the apple), die Wassermelone (the watermelon)

Use one topic for one week. Your child sees the same words again on different coloring pages.

How to use one coloring page

One coloring page needs about ten minutes. A short, regular session is better than one long lesson.

  1. Read the German word aloud with your child.
  2. Point to the picture and say the word again.
  3. Let your child color the picture.
  4. Ask your child to say the German word one more time.
  5. Read the German sentence on the page together.

Do not test your child during the coloring. The coloring is the reward. Ask for the word only at the start and at the end.

If you do not speak German

Many parents cannot check the German words. This is not a problem for a coloring page. Each soruLab coloring page shows the meaning of the German word and the German sentence. The meaning is in English by default. After you buy the monthly plan, we translate the meanings into your native language.

If you do not know the pronunciation, use a free dictionary with audio. Play the word once, then say it together with your child.

Print or tablet

You can print the coloring page on A4 paper. Your child can also color the page on a tablet with a drawing app. Paper is easier for young children. A tablet is useful when you travel.

Keep the coloring pages that your child completes in one folder. At the end of the week, open the folder with your child. Your child names each picture in German.

Where to find German coloring pages

The soruLab German coloring pages are for children from 6 to 10. Each page has one big picture, one German word, one German sentence and its meaning. The page shows sample coloring pages and the monthly plan.
